Auckland Wintergardens

Constructed over the period 1915 - 1931 the Wintergardens are a landmark feature of the Auckland Domain. However, eight decades of neglect took its toll on the buildings and in 2003 Salmond Reed Architects were briefed on the restoration requirements of the glasshouses and attendant structures.

The restoration project consisted of three distinct stages – the Cool House, central pergolas and pond area, and the Temperate House. All areas had suffered from inadequate maintenance over time.

Salmond Reed’s work on the Wintergardens was recognised with an NZIA Resene Local Branch Award in 2006.

The Wintergarden Pavilion took a community and cultural prize for the architect's skill in restoring the building to its former glory in a way that did not intrude on its intrinsic character.
