Calliope Road Café

This project comprised the conversion of part of the local dairy/superette into a neighbourhood café.

The existing superette had occupied two buildings, a Category B scheduled two-storeyed shop and dwelling and an adjacent single storeyed corner shop. The single storey housed the original grocery shop while the two storeyed shop and dwelling were added by the grocer’s wife in the 1920s. This shop served the locals in pre-supermarket days and was also a butchery outlet at one stage, prior to its dairy use.

With the changing demographic of the area, the building owners saw the advantage of investing in this conversion to embrace the currently popular café culture.

Salmond Reed was responsible for the concept design, project documentation and the supervision of the building contract.

The new décor preserves original elements such as the blue-bordered white tiled wall, original brick walls and the pale green painted ceiling with cast iron ties. These features have been augmented with new lighting and furniture while the installation of new bi-fold windows on the Huia Street elevation has introduced loads of natural light, outlook and ventilation.

The reconstructed old verandah provides shelter for outside seating in the summer months, thus enhancing this welcome addition to the area.
