St John the Baptist Church, Parnell
As far as can be ascertained, St John the Baptist Church is the oldest surviving Catholic church in the Auckland Diocese and one of the oldest in New Zealand. It has heritage listings with both New Zealand Historic Places Trust and Auckland Council.
Salmond Reed has a longstanding association with the Parish and since the mid 1990s has carried out work on both the church itself and the nearby presbytery building and surrounds.
This work has ranged from additions, such as the sensitively integrated church entrance canopy, through to alterations, repairs and maintenance work, including structural upgrading and colour schemes.
A major project where Salmond Reed was responsible for all aspects of the contract, including design, consents application and contract management, was the development of a major 100 car capacity parking area to the rear of the property. This made a significant contribution to the Parnell business district, where opportunity for parking facilities is restricted.
The heritage status of the property and its location in the heart of a Special Character Area means that all such work needs to be carried out in full consultation with the various heritage authorities and with sensitivity to ensure preservation of the heritage values inherent in the buildings.
